Why wireline core drilling is booming

 

Gold exploration budgets reached $6.2 billion in 2025 up 19% and roughly half of the global $12.4 billion exploration spend. Wireline coring is the fastest-growing drilling segment at a 7.7% CAGR (2025 2029). What is a wireline drill rod?

 

The hollow, threaded alloy steel pipe that powers wireline core drilling. Rotation and thrust pass through the rod string to the diamond bit, while the core sample collects in an inner tube retrieved by an overshot on a wireline cable no full tripping of the string. At depths over 500 m, wireline coring runs 3 5× faster than conventional coring .
