NQ vs HQ Wireline Drill Rod: Which Size for Deep Core Drilling?

Aug 07, 2026

Wireline Core Drill Rods: BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ & Thin Wall BTW/NTW/HTW Sizes, Steel Grades & Buying Tips

Why wireline core drilling is booming

Gold exploration budgets reached $6.2 billion in 2025 up 19% and roughly half of the global $12.4 billion exploration spend. Wireline coring is the fastest-growing drilling segment at a 7.7% CAGR (20252029). Deeper holes, tighter schedules and costly downtime make the wireline drill rod the component buyers cannot afford to get wrong.

What is a wireline drill rod?

The hollow, threaded alloy steel pipe that powers wireline core drilling. Rotation and thrust pass through the rod string to the diamond bit, while the core sample collects in an inner tube retrieved by an overshot on a wireline cable no full tripping of the string. At depths over 500 m, wireline coring runs 35× faster than conventional coring .

Wireline drill rod sizes: DCDMA standard

All standard sizes follow the DCDMA standard, so rods, core barrels, casing and bits are interchangeable worldwide:

Size

Rod OD / Core (mm)

Size

Rod OD / Core (mm)

BQ

55.6 / 36.4

BTW

56.6 / 42.0 (+15% vs BQ)

NQ

70.1 / 47.6

NTW

73.3 / 56 (+28% vs NQ)

HQ

89 / 63.6

HTW

91.2 / 71.0 (+12% vs HQ)

PQ

114.5 / 85.0

NQ is the industry default for mineral exploration; HQ delivers a ~33% larger core for detailed assay and rock mechanics; PQ suits large-diameter geotechnical investigation; BTW/NTW/HTW thin wall rods put a bigger core through the same hole for slim hole and portable drilling rig programs. Extended series available: ATW, NTW2, HTWA, HWTH, PHD, NRQ, HRQ, PRQ, CR50/CR60 and ASAHI standard.

Steel grades & threads that last

ZT950 (yield 950 MPa) and 30CrMnSiA (835 MPa) high-strength alloy steel resist rod droop and fatigue in deep hole drilling.

Q thread (tapered; RQ/XQ variants) delivers fast make-up, high torque and anti-galling performance; forged, heat-treated ends and high straightness (~0.4 mm/m) extend service life.

Why drill rods fail and how to prevent it

Galling steel-on-steel thread welding under torque; always use thread compound and follow torque specs.

Rod droop gravity deviates the string near 1,000 m; high-yield steel resists bending.

Straightness out-of-tolerance rods vibrate and destroy bits; measure on delivery.

Fatigue uneven heat treatment causes cracks; ask for heat-treatment documentation.

FAQ

Q1. NQ vs HQ which size? NQ (core 47.6 mm) is the most widely used standard and fastest; HQ (core 63.5 mm) gives a ~33% larger core for better assay confidence at lower speed.

Q2. What is "thin wall" (BTW/NTW/HTW)? Thin kerf rods recover a larger core through the same hole NTW gains ~28% over NQ ideal for slim hole and portable rigs.

Q3. Can I order a sample before bulk? Yes 1-piece MOQ sample orders are standard for testing fit, threads and performance.
