One Piece, No Welds: How Upset Drill Rods Keep Your Rig Turning

Sep 08, 2026

Downhole accidents, unplanned downtime and high replacement costs — none of these are abstract terms for anyone who buys or runs drill rods. Thread galling, tooth chipping and root cracking remain the most stubborn failure modes in wireline coring, and too often the root cause sits at the rod's most critical point: the joint. CGE Wuxi's answer is to forge the joint and the tube into one piece — the upset wireline core drill rod.

Integral Upset Forging: The Joint Is No Longer the Weak Link

One piece, no welds. The NQUA integral upset drill rod is formed by a one-piece hot forging inner upset process: the tube and the connecting end are forged together, with no welded splice. The upset end is locally thickened, with a smooth and uniform wall thickness transition, structurally eliminating the stress concentration, weld cracking and fatigue damage risks of traditional welded drill rods. A smooth inner bore keeps drilling fluid flowing freely and lowers disassembly resistance for matched tools.

ZT950 Quenched-Tempered Steel: Built for 2,050 m

The deeper the hole, the harsher the loads on the string. The NQUA is made of quenched and tempered ZT950 alloy seamless steel with yield strength ≥ 950 MPa. Its torsion, compression, impact and fatigue resistance outperform conventional DZ-series geological drill rods, resisting bending, distortion and fracture within its recommended 2,050 m depth — suited to continuous operation in complex strata with high formation pressure, dense hard rock and broken rock.

Precision & Sealing: Details That Keep Deep Holes Stable

The upset section is CNC-machined to precise tolerances that perfectly match the locking threads: tight joint fit and reliable sealing, with no leakage or pressure loss of high-pressure flushing fluid. An optimized gradient wall thickness structure disperses alternating stress along the rod, ensuring stable torque transmission at the rated 2,050 m depth and effectively avoiding thread galling, abnormal wear and uncoupling — the engineering answer to the pain points in the opening.

The Full Upset Range

Beyond the NQUA, the upset rod family includes the HQUA with both ends upset and quenched-tempered, the NA / HA / PA with upset ends, and the NQA-IUW variable wall internal upset rod — covering medium-deep geological drilling, solid mineral exploration and hydrological investigation. Short 1.5 m rods suit mine tunnels and confined sites, while longer rods reduce joint count and assembly time. Lengths, threads and packaging can be customized (OEM/ODM) from your drawings or samples, with MOQ of just 1 piece for sample testing.
